These volunteer programs are for people interested in learning about sustainable solutions to poverty. All volunteers will work in partnership with local people in a variety of community-based projects. Volunteer Opportunities Available in Peru (Child Welfare)

Description : For a boys orphanage we are looking for experts or students who can teach the boys about cooking, pastry making, etc. There is a big kitchen with enough facilities to cook and bake. Because of a lack of staff these facilities are never used, though. The idea is to teach the boys a profession that will give them a better chance to reintegrate in society after they have to leave the orphanage. Please note that this project doesn’t have any resources, so it would be very much appreciated if you could raise some money before you start working with the boys, at least to pay for the required materials for the course.
Minimum commitment: 12 weeks.
Level of Spanish: Intermediate
Location: 15-20 minutes from our institute in Cusco

Description : For a project in a small jungle village that offers room and board to 30 boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 and that offers legal aid to the village’s population, we are looking for volunteers who wish to help out in the legal advice center. You will be dealing with the problems of both the children of the project and the villagers who mostly have problems with violence, abandonment and sexual abuse. Please note that this project doesn’t have any resources, so it would be very much appreciated if you could raise some money before you start working.
Minimum commitment: 12 weeks.
Level of Spanish: High-intermediate; be highly motivated.

Description : An after-school project for children. Most of the children come from families whose parents work at the market. INABIF offers education and helps the children with their homework. Besides this, the project also offers extra activities like painting, music, dancing and sports.
Activities: Due to a shortage of money, INABIF cannot pay the salaries to all the personnel needed. Volunteers are needed to help the children with their homework, organize creative workshops and sports and teach the children about other cultures.
Requirements: Enthusiasm for working with children. Preference is given to volunteers with experience in working with children, such as teachers. A plan on what you would like to do with the children needs to be submitted before you start your volunteer work.
Minimum: 4 weeks

(This project is closed from mid December until the second week of April)
Description : Working with school children and their teachers from different schools come to play and work with the special resources. There are different areas in which the children can play and learn: audio and visual media, logic and mathematics, personal and social skills and articulation.
Activities: Assist children and their teachers in the organize activities and develop new teaching materials. The government has stopped the funding for salaries for the Ludoteca, so experienced volunteers are asked to work in the Ludoteca independently. Also, work at the Ludoteca can be combined with work at the kindergarten next door
Requirements: Creativity, patience and enthusiasm for working with small children.
Spanish: Intermediate
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8.45am – 12:30 pm

Description : Institute that offers alternative schooling - Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary - to children from all social levels. Parents pay a school fee according to their means so that poor children have the opportunity to receive the same education as children from other social levels. There is also an educational services center where new educational materials are developed.
Activities: Pukllasunchis would like to share their knowledge and resources with other institutes. Volunteers will go to one of the schools in or around Cusco that lack sufficient materials and knowledge. There are schools in Cusco, but also in the Sacred Valley and the jungle, near Puerto Maldonado. During the first weeks you will prepare new educational materials in the workshop. After this, you will take the new materials to a school and work with both the teachers and the children showing them how to use these materials.
Requirements: Able to work independently and create educational materials.
Minimum: 6 months
Spanish: High Intermediate
Schedule: During the preparation workshop, the schedule is flexible. The following weeks the schedule runs from 8am till 1pm.

Description : Project for street children and working children, situated very close to the city center. Most of the children sell sweets and postcards or work as shoe shiners. Not all of them go to school. In the project they can meet other children, relax, eat and learn. There are also workshops on self-esteem, hygiene and aids prevention.
Activities: Help children with their homework, play with them, organize recreational and creative activities and assist in workshops.
Requirements: Flexibility and ability to work independently.

Description : Shelter for street children about 40 minutes from the city center (part of the project mentioned above). The home offers a bed and food to 17 boys that before lived in the streets. Most of the boys are former drug addicts or pickpockets. The shelter is situated in a small village where the boys go to school. In the afternoons they do homework and work in the green house. The home also keeps some animals.
Activities: Help the boys with their homework and organizing creative workshops and sport activities. You can also help in the green house and on the land or organize carpentry workshops. There is also a lot of work to be done in the construction of the building.
Requirements: Flexibility and ability to work independently.

Description : For a boys and girls orphanage in Cusco we are looking for volunteers or interns who can teach theatre, dance, music and other handicrafts. Also people who know how to work with leather, ceramics or people with other specialties are more then welcome to teach the children new skills.

Description : For a boy’s orphanage in Cusco we are looking for teachers with knowledge of computers, to teach the boys the basic skills of Word, Excel and the Internet.

| Extracurricilar Activities Included in this Program |
| The center offers the following Cultural Workshops with local teachers that can be booked at an additional cost in blocks of separate hours, either during the week or in the weekend. If several students are interested in the same course, there are good discount options. These are a great opportunity to learn about real Peruvian traditional culture and a good complement to the Spanish Course.
 • Peruvian Music In this workshop is include different options: guitar, charango (Peruvian guitar), zampoña (panflute) and/or quena (flute). There is no need to have experience playing an instrument nor to be able to read music. Participants will quickly learn to play a few well-know songs. This is a "must" for people who are interested in Peruvian folklore!
• Peruvian Cooking For people who want to learn more about traditional Peruvian cuisine! One free cooking class is included in the Student Activities, but there's so much more! Learn about the endless different kinds of "papas" (potatoes), about the traditional "quinoa" and the use of native herbs!
• Peruvian Dance Traditional Peruvian dance is an important component of the native folklore. Try salsa and cumbia, as well the typical "huayno", the valls, carnaval Cusqueño, huayllas, la diabla, majeño ....... Great fun!
• Pottery Together with a local institution, the school organizes pottery workshops. For this course, students are required to sign up for a minimum of 10 hours. Learn about techniques and traditional Inca figures and styles.
• Cultural Exchange Program The center organizes a cultural exchange program in collaboration with university students of Cuzco. A perfect way to practice your Spanish and to know more about what the local people do, feel, and think! |
