These volunteer programs are for people interested in learning about sustainable solutions to poverty. All volunteers will work in partnership with local people in a variety of community-based projects. This unique program offers exciting hands-on work opportunities, meaningful cultural immersion, and an enriching language program.

Volunteer Opportunities Available in Bolivia

Subject: Medical

Objectives: An excellent opportunity for all those interested in the area of medicine. There are 400 patients, as well as a team of doctors, nurses, assistants, psychologists, therapists, physiotherapists, Bolivian medical students, etc. Everything in this hospital is very clean and organized.

Location: The hospital is in Sucre, Bolivia. 15 minutes from our School. Students would be able to start any monday of the month.

Eligibility: undergraduate, graduate students and adults with an undergraduate degree or higher in the health care field. Guidelines: Positions on a space available basis. These are unpaid positions. 

Requirements:

  • Experience working with young and old patients.
  • Lots of patience, energy, and creativity!

The volunteers work mainly with friendly patients, talking with them, helping with exercises, practicing sports, etc. There is a section for elderly patients who need help with wheelchairs, reading newspapers and eating. Student volunteers are not responsible for bathing these patients. The hospital employs persons who are specialists in this type of care.

Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks

Level in the language: Intermediate.
Beginner and Post Beginner level in Spanish must take 4 weeks pre course prior to beginning volunteer work.

Schedule: Varies approximately 10-20 hours per week

Lodging: With a host family, single with private bath and 2 meals and laundry.

Objectives: This center is a orphanage. There are children who have been abandoned or are at risk in their families. Most are between the ages of 5 and 18. Kids come here for workshops in carpentry, shoe making, metallurgy and leather working. The idea is for them to develop manual skill in case they are unable to enter a university in the future.

Location: The Center is in Sucre, Bolivia. 15-20 minutes from our School.

Duration: 4 weeks to 12 weeks (Students can start any monday of the month)

Eligibility: undergraduate degree or higher.

Guidelines: Positions on a space available basis. These are unpaid positions.

Requirements: This positions are combined with the school language courses. Some Spanish preparatory work may be required before beginning the volunteering work. They need volunteers with some experience in administration, secretary, psychology, English professors and above all, people who know carpentry, shoe making, metallurgy and leather working. Also needed are those familiar with sports instruction; baseball, basketball and soccer, as well as those who know music or computers.

Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks

Level in the language: Intermediate, otherwise the student needs to take a 4 week language program prior to the volunteer.

Schedule: In the afternoon

Capacity: (two volunteers)

Objectives: They need English and German teaching assistants for classroom instruction and also teaching English and German to school administration, teachers willing to support English or German teachers after classes.

Location: Private Kindergarden, Nursery Schools, Elementary and High Schools throughout Sucre.

Duration: 4 weeks to 12 weeks (Students can start any monday of the month)

Eligibility: undergraduate, graduate students and adults with an undergraduate degree or higher.

Guidelines: This are unpaid positions. The positions are available to anyone interested that meets the requirements.

Requirements: Relevant experience in English and German teaching. Teacher certificate is a must.

Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks

Level in the language: Intermediate, otherwise the student needs to take a 4 week language program prior to the volunteer.

Schedule: Varies.

Subject: Social Services

Objectives: This is a developmental center for children who work in the streets, shining shoes, selling newspapers or carrying bags for women in the central market. The children are between the ages of 5 and 15.

The dining room prepares lunch for these kids and while they wait for food they take classes in drawing and Andean music, watch videos and may be examine by doctors. The schedule is from 11 to 2:00 pm.

Location: The facility is in Sucre, Bolivia. 15 minutes from our School.

Students would be able to start any monday of the month.

Eligibility: undergraduate, graduate students and adults with an undergraduate degree or higher.

Guidelines: Positions on a space available basis. These are unpaid positions.

Requirements: From Monday to Friday around 20 children are in attendance. There may be as many as 35 or 40 during weekends and vacations. 

Spanish-speaking volunteers are needed (intermediate level) who can perform any task necessary, be it cleaning up, playing games or making food. Above all, volunteers should be leaders who are responsible and can make their own decisions.

Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks

Level in the language: Intermediate level.

Schedule: Varies approx.10-15 hours/week. The schedule is from 11 to 2pm.

Objectives: This foundation provides aid, education and rehabilitation to: patients who where born blind; who have lost their sight due to illness or accident or who are visually impaired in some capacity. Main focus or organization is to teach the patients how to live independently.

Location: The Center is in Sucre, Bolivia. 15-20 minutes from our School.

Duration: 4 weeks to 12 weeks (Students can start any monday of the month)

Eligibility: undergraduate, graduate students and adults with an undergraduate degree or higher.

Guidelines: This are unpaid positions and available to anyone interested.

Requirements: They need Therapists, psychotherapists and teachers. They also need compassionate people with a understanding of underfunded organizations a must. Previous experience with blind/visually impaired not necessary, just a desire to help in that arena.

Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks

Level in the language: High intermediate

Schedule: Varies depending on project and current need, 7 shifts available.

Capacity: (16 volunteers)

Objectives: A nonprofit organization dedicated to the environment especially educating people about the advantages to saving natural resources. They run 3 separate programs that operate in different months throughout the year. 

Tree project; dedicated to planting trees in parks, suburbs, streets, plazas, etc., volunteers work with neighbors and local citizens. Clean up project; volunteers work with scouts cleaning up the city. Quality of life project; dedicated to educating people about natural resources, including water conservation, river contamination, etc., through presentations in public schools, theaters and community visits.

Duration: 4 weeks to 12 weeks (Students can start any monday of the month)

Eligibility: Any ages

Guidelines: This are unpaid positions. They are available to anyone that meets the requirements.

Requirements: A love for nature. Public speaking skills help!

Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks

Level in the language: High intermediate

Schedule: Depending on the projects. Tree project runs from October 2nd until the end of February. Clean up project runs from September 15 to October 15. Quality of Life Project runs from April 22nd (Earth Day) until October 2nd.

Objectives: The Museum primarily serves 20,000 school children annually from the city of Sucre, offering interactive exhibits on Bolivian culture, health, science, art and applied technology. The children will be able to assimilate new knowledge and be encouraged to use their imagination to construct their own realities, enjoy and express themselves. 

The museum staff of professionals includes an anthropologist, architect, designer, educator and psychologist along with itinerant consultants in the areas of exhibit design, linguistics, theatre and museum science as well as the extraordinary help of hundreds of volunteers from all over the world along the year. 

This Museum is an effort towards the interaction of the human experience, physical and meta-physical, logical and magical, proposes three programs that constitute pervasive yet unifying themes to be considered in the development of all museum exhibits and activities. These three programs are 1) intercultural dialogue between children, 2) study of the environment encompassing the child and 3) the development of a child’s creativity and expression. 

They also offer ceramics classes, English lessons, drawing/paint courses, etc… for kids aged 6 to 12 years old.

Duration: 4 weeks to 12 weeks (Students can start any monday of the month)

Guidelines: This are unpaid positions. They are available to anyone that meets the requirements.

Requirements: A love for nature. Public speaking skills help!

Capacity: (Up to 20 volunteers at one time)

Extracurricilar Activities Included in this Program
Excursions,Cultural & Social Activities As part of the language program, the school offers 2 to 3 organized activities every week. In addition, students will find a daily schedule of cultural events in Sucre and surrounding areas, locations of theaters, museums, and festivals, and all ticket information.

Activities include: Visits to local areas of interest, dance classes, cooking classes, parties & fiestas, spanish languages videos & movies, seminars & discussion groups. Please Note: You may need to pay "out-of-pocket" expenses (bus fare, entrance fees, etc.)

Weekend trips are not organized by the school, but they can assist you with your arrangements on-site
