All volunteers will work in partnership with local people in a variety of community-based projects. Volunteer Opportunities Available in Brazil

Objectives: Teaching English, hygiene, civil rights, counselling and assisting with school work.
The Project is a NGO that works with street children age This project is on helping infants and teenagers who live on the streets, drug addicts, homossexuals, etc.
The institution works in two different locations. The first location is their “house”, where they go to sleep protected from any harm. And the second house is where they learn a profession and work at the same time.
The goal of this institution is to recuperate the value of citizenship of these children. To achieve this goal, they get the children out of the streets, feed them, give them a place to stay, teach them a job, give them information on hygiene, civil rights, etc., so they can be returned to the Society better formed.
Location: 15-20 minutes from the instito in Maceio.
Duration: 4 weeks to 12 weeks (Students can start any monday of the month)
Eligibility: Undergraduate, graduate students and adults with an undergraduate degree or higher.
Guidelines: Volunteer positions on a space available basis. These are unpaid positions.
Requirements: Minimum age: 21 years. Experience working with street children or children with emotional problems. Lots of patience, energy, and creativity! (Patience and a willingness to be helpful in all areas of the projet. Also, the volunteers have to be open minded to any situation and task)
Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks
Level in the language: Low Intermediate level. Those students at the beginning and post beginning level of Portuguese are required to complete a minimum of 4 weeks of Portuguese study of 20 hours per week prior to volunteering.
Schedule: After the language school and varies
Capacity: (two volunteers)
Lodging: With a host family, single with private bath and 2 meals and laundry.
Other: Please register at least 40 days prior to requested program start date. Visa is required to enter Brazil.

Subject: Social Services
Objectives: Teaching English, hygiene, civil rights, counselling and assisting with school work.
A NGO that works with street children age This organization is on helping infants and teenagers who live on the streets, drug addicts, homossexuals, etc. Besides they also work in a favela (poor neighborhood) with the local community. They maintain a small school in this place where, in the mornings they alphabetize the children and teach health care, hygiene and other basic things. In the evenings, they alphabetize adults, usually the children’s parents, and teach them basic notions of citizenship (rights and duties)
Location: 15-20 minutes from the instito in Maceio. In the “vila brejal” neighborhood, which is 20 minutes distant by bus from Ponta Verde neighborhood, in Maceio. Students would be able to start any monday of the month.
Eligibility: undergraduate, graduate students and adults with an undergraduate degree or higher.
Guidelines: Positions on a space available basis. These are unpaid positions.
Requirements: Minimum age: 21 years. Experience working with street children or children with emotional problems. (Patience and a willingness to be helpful in all areas of the projet. Also, the volunteers have to be open minded to any situation and task)Volunteers should be creative enough to teach activities using readily available materials such as newspaper, cardboard, cans, etc.
Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks
Level in the language: Low Intermediate level. Those students at the beginning and post beginning level of Portuguese are required to complete a minimum of 4 weeks of Portuguese study of 20 hours per week prior to volunteering.
Schedule: Varies. Arranged upon arrival.

Subject: Medical
Objectives: This program is designed to introduce students to public health issues in Latin America, especially those particular to Brazil, how they affect living standards, welfare, immigrants, fiscal policies, trade, and science policy. The time spent in the hospitals will purely be for observation; students will not be participating in any medical procedures.
Location: 15-20 minutes from the instito in Maceio.
Eligibility: undergraduate, graduate students and adults with an undergraduate degree or higher in the medical field.
Requirements: Volunteer positions on a space available basis. These are unpaid positions.
Minimum Work Commitment: 4 weeks
Level in the language: Intermediate level. Those students at the beginning and post beginning level of Portuguese are required to complete a minimum of 4 weeks of Portuguese study of 20 hours per week prior to volunteering.
Schedule: After the language school and varies
Capacity: There are limited number of positions every month.
Lodging: With a host family, single with private bath and 2 meals and laundry.
Other: Please register at least 40 days prior to requested program start date. Visa is required to enter Brazil.

| Extracurricilar Activities Included in this Program |

The school arranges excursions on the weekend, once every two weeks, in and around the cities of Maceio. These excursions are organized and led by subject-matter experts or the school's sta ff to both cultural and environmental attractions, beaches, etc., such as Praia de Pajucara, Maceio's main attraction, with jangadas (small sailing boats) that take visitors to the picinas naturais (tidal pools).
Other Activities include:
- Café Regional: Every first week of the month, students, teachers and friends get together in school to have a typical evening meal and even take the opportunity to participate in karaoke.
- Ritmos Nordestinos: See a show of Northeastern Brazilian rhythms and dances in a historic setting.
- Futebol: Watch a Brazilian Major Soccer League match.
- Capoeira: Visit a Capoeira school to learn about this Brazilian martial art.
- Passeio das 9 ilhas: Boat ride along Lagoa Mundau, with stops to visit some of its islands.
- União dos Palmares: Visit to Quilombo dos Palmares, one of the biggest colonies of runaway slaves.
- Piscina Natural: Take a trip in a small sail boat to Pajuçara's tidal pools where one can do snorkeling and hand-feed small fishes.
Travel Assistance: As a member of a group travel agency, the school can help those students interested in arranging travel within Brazil during or after their language program. |
